Kamiar´s Member Interview

Dawn Lindsey is the featured Member Interview in our upcoming April newsletter.

Dawn, 43 (she feels 30, though!), was born in Aiken, SC. Her father was in the military and the family moved around a lot. She has lived in Florida, Georgia, Nevada, California, South Carolina, Montana, Kansas, Mississippi, Texas, Arizona, and Oklahoma, and is very glad to now call Austin her permanent home. Dawn is married to ultra Mark (he was featured in November/December 2002 issue of the newsletter), and they welcomed the arrival of Lily in October 2007. Dawn is a graduate of UT-Austin and currently runs Freescale Semiconductor’s internal design agency, a team of about 30. She is 90% vegan; cheese is her favorite indulgence; and cheap mittens that she buys at Walgreens to keep her hands toasty warm on cold running days are her must-have running gear. She loves Austin’s trails and green belt, and wishes that large running groups on the trail respect the other runners. When she was 8 months pregnant and out for a walk on the trail, she was literally knocked off the trail into the bushes by a group of runners who did not yield when they were passing her.

Dawn joined the ARC, and I quote “to meet guys,” specifically guys who enjoyed doing what she loves, that is, running. She found the club to be very social and as she typically does, she got 100% involved and found herself as president of the club shortly thereafter (2003 – 2004), as well as 2003 Decker Challenge race director. She noticed Mark when she was running meetings and looking out at the crowd. He kept staring at her, and she felt certain that he was going to ask her out. When he didn’t, she called him up. She left him a message and he thought that she had called to invite him to speak at an upcoming club meeting because he had just completed three Ironman triathlons in three weeks. At that time, she had no idea that he had done that and I quote again, “that he was crazy and an ultra distance athlete!” They went to dinner and the rest is history. Dawn is attracted to Mark’s intensity. Supporting him in races usually involves her crewing for him which means being in charge of his nutrition and support during his races. Although crewing is really a tough work, Dawn enjoys it because it provides her with an opportunity to be part of the amazing ultra distance community that allows her to commune with people from all over the world and to travel to great places. Now she just picks her future travel destinations and asks Mark to find a race there, that way, they get to see the world and Mark gets to do what he loves. Additionally, Dawn and Mark are very excited about raising Lily in an athletic and active household, which will make it possible for her to see all the beautiful places that they will travel to support their lifestyle. She and Mark are committed to getting Lily in the pool at 6 months since swimming is the weakest sport for both and they are hoping to give her a competitive advantage in case she chooses to follow the multi-sport path in her life.

Dawn was 12 years old when she began running. It was back in the days of the Presidential Physical Fitness tests that students had to do in high school, which included sit-ups, push-ups, and running a mile or something like that. Dawn completed her tests and then went to the gym to make the drill team tryouts. She was fairly certain that she was going to be on the drill team because she had been a competitive gymnast in Junior High. However, her run time was the best and the track coach who was present at the drill team tryouts noticed it and mounted a convincing argument as to why Dawn should be on the cross country team. She left the tryouts and never looked back.

Up to pregnancy, Dawn used to run 4 - 5 times a week, rather religiously, on the trail and during early morning hours to witness the sunrise. During the pregnancy, she was walking 1-2 times a week, as she had to deal with being pregnant in the middle of the summer. As of this writing in January 2008, she was anxious to return to her previous schedule as soon as she could if Lily cooperated. Dawn rarely participates in running races, as she runs for the training, the fitness, and the joy that it offers her. When she was in her teens, she cut this saying out of a magazine, “Runners run. It’s how we deal with stress. It’s where we talk with God.” She has been carrying it around ever since, as it basically summarizes her running/training philosophy. She thinks that training should be about consistency. People have asked her over and over, how do you get up so early to run and she always tells them that she does not make it a choice, that it is just what she does, and she feels so much better because of it. She mainly listens to her body and runs on the basis of how she feels, focusing on the fundamentals of core strength, balance, form, and agility, as they are the basis for staying healthy and running strong. She works in such a high pressure job that being on a strict training regimen feels too much like work and she tends to resist it, even though she realizes that she could have been a better runner had she followed one.

As you read earlier, Dawn does not participate in running races on a regular basis. If she did, her favorite racing distance would be the half marathon. Her racing philosophy goes back to her high school years. She tended to run at the front of the pack, and her coach always yelled at her to never let anyone pass her. She was the strongest runner on the team and it was expected that she would place in the top three at any race. She believes that experience is the reason for her being a bad racer, because she never runs her race, but tends to pick up the pace of whoever is trying to pass her. Of course her level of fitness is very different now than it was back then; therefore, she can no longer do it. When racing, she constantly reminds herself to ignore everyone around her and enjoy her own experience and her own race. Her most significant running accomplishment is that she remains relatively injury free and that she still loves doing it; she wants to be running when she is 80+. Her running wish-list includes the Great Wall of China Marathon and the New York City Marathon.

Dawn encourages all novice runners to get involved with a training group to help learn the fundamentals and focus on form. If you are just starting, learn the proper body mechanics so you can stay injury free and efficient. And invest in your equipment. Good shoes and clothing can be the difference in how you enjoy your running experience. And her two cents for more experienced runners: be consistent with your training. Respect the base training you have and don’t take it for granted. Treat your nutrition as you would any other aspect of your training - give your body the proper fuel to maintain intensity, endurance, and to allow for proper recovery. Get lots of sleep and remember to always have fun. She reminds Mark, when she is crewing for him and he gets a little whiny because things aren’t going as he wants them, to remember that no matter how he is feeling, he is fortunate enough to be doing what he loves and he should focus on that. It is all about the journey.

Dawn concluded the interview by sharing with me the following, that each day we should take the time to exercise our minds, our bodies, our creativities, and our humanities. She and Mark hope to instill this philosophy in their daughter so that she lives a full active life.

Kamiar Kouzekanani, an ARC member since 1999, lives in Corpus Christi. He has been writing about ARC members for the newsletter since 2002.
